The Conservation Area

The conservation area has 3 Sub-Areas:

1) Summerhill ‘Square’ – housing and other buildings around a green space; also some development on Westgate Hill;

2) Elswick Road to Westmorland Road – the upper streets together with the Barber Surgeons’ Hall and Victoria
Street;

3) Westgate Hill Cemetery.

The main theme is a surviving remnant of well-weathered, polite, late-Georgian terraced housing, which has a strong synergy with topography, and is surrounded by unrelated development mostly well over 100 years younger. On entering the area, the feeling is one of discovery – it is a very different place altogether from that which surrounds it.
